About This Project

Reforestation Project
Ghana / Brong Ahafo Region / Wenchi

The starting point:

The region’s former forest areas have been stubbed (due to wood extraction, export to Europe and Asia, as well as clearing by fire), such that a bush-like grass landscape has resulted.

The area’s habitat has forever changed:

Forest animals have been displaced or died, the land is drying up, possibilities for agricultural use are extremely limited, and there is a tendency towards monoculture (peanuts, maize, yams, cassava) with the use of chemical fertilizers, which leads to further nutrient depletion of the soil.

Countermeasures/Project:

As this situation is exceptionally unsatisfactory and even dangerous—given the reduction in precipitation—for nature and the populace, the king of the Wechi region, King Nana Abrafah Morre Bediatuo (now deceased), gave a provisional area of 300 hectares for reforestation to Mr. Samuel Domfeh.

If this is successful, Mr. Domfeh will receive a further 700 hectares of land (thus a total of 1000 hectares) for this project. A further expansion of the reforestation project is possible. Every king or sub-chief has already declared himself willing to subsequently consign land to Mr. Domfeh for sustainable reforestation. So far, no one except for Mr. Domfeh has agreed to take on this task, not even foreign investors, as their goal is the exploitation of the soil without sustainable measures for nature and habitat.

Start of project:
Reforestation commenced in March 2008 on approximately 100 hectares for the time being, along with the planting of trees in addition to maize and yams. An intact forest area will thus arise after roughly 15 years.

Advantages:
Provision of new jobs on-site (forest management, cultivation and harvest of maize and yams, etc.), improved local provision of food, gradual increase in rainfall, improvement in microclimate and soil quality.
