About This Project

This is a Wolfe's Neck Farm project

Our Plan:
The Green Energy Project will identify a small group of local high schools and businesses interested in investing in solar and wind energy systems. Green Energy Project staff will work with these schools, businesses and organizations to recruit teenagers to apply to the project. Green Energy Project staff will work within the Wolfe’s Neck Farm Education Program, an established environmental and agriculture education program, and draw on its network of former participants, staff, and volunteers in its school and summer camp programs to recruit applicants.

From this applicant pool, The Green Energy Project will select group of committed, talented group of students and adults to be Green Energy Fellows. The Fellows will be trained in leadership, cooperation and creative problem solving. In two separate groups of ten, the Fellows will use these skills to assemble working solar panels from raw materials, which will provide power for the Wolfe's Neck Farm agricultural and educational programs. Future groups will construct wind generation facilities as the Green Energy Project program gains resources and participation.

The Fellows will also develop educational materials and learn effective presentation skills as they share their experiences with Wolfe's Neck Farm visitors and campers. They will then lead workshops for the selected local schools and organizations about their experiences and solar energy. The selected schools and businesses will be given the opportunity to have a team of Fellows construct a solar array at their location next year, or be referred to professional solar installers. In either case, the Project will work with the school or business to implement solar energy in the future.

3 Project Updates

Mission last month by Eliav Bitan

To empower future environmental leaders to build and advocate for renewable energy technologies.

Rationale in November 2008 by Eliav Bitan

Current fossil fuel energy sources are producing global warming and running out. Our reliance on these fuels, which are mainly found overseas presents a national security risk. Solar energy will not run out, or contribute to global warming. It can also be produced in our own backyards without releasing any pollutants.

The barrier to the implementation of solar energy which will we address is that the technology is seen as expensive, complicated, and exotic. The Project will demonstrate that solar energy can be harnessed cheaply and easily.

By selecting young people, the Project will empower those most effected by the problems of fossil fuel energy. By selecting businesses and schools who are considering installing solar energy to present to, the project enables those young people to be successful agents of change. The Fellows will have the experience of building a solar energy system, of teaching about solar energy, and of creating change in their local area. This experience will be a powerful resource for the Fellows in their development as leaders in the fields of not only solar energy, but environmental and social problems as well.

Measurable Impacts Determined in November 2008 by Eliav Bitan

The Wolfe's Neck Farm Clean Renewable Energy project will produce specific measurable impacts. These metrics will be assessed periodically and reported to investors and stakeholders. The most important impact will be training a team of 20 diverse fellows from southern Maine in problem-solving and presentation.
The fellows will build two solar arrays that will produce a combined 1,300 kwh of energy per year, equivalent to over 1,000 lbs of CO2 emissions. They will present this experience to the roughly 200 day campers and their families who will be at Wolfe's Neck Farm during the project.
Their presentations will prepare the Fellows to lead workshops with eight selected organizations. Each organization will be selected because it is on the tipping point of choosing to install solar energy. The fellows will be empowered to be agents of change by meeting with decision-makers at the eight selected local organizations. A crucial measure of our success will be the number of these organizations that choose to install solar energy as a result of the project. We are aiming for over half.
In addition, the solar energy array and educational materials produced by the Fellows will be presented to the 3,100 people who are part of formal field trips to Wolfe's Neck Farm each year.
