Should we petition Governor Schwarzenegger for bike lanes on LA freeways?,

Reading about the Crimanimalz and their efforts to ride through LA, I think we need a worldwide petition to the California Governor to set aside lanes on LA freeways for cyclists.

Who thinks this is a good idea, and does anyone know how we can make this happen?

Perhaps putting cycle paths alongside freeways is a good idea, but sharing the same surface as freeway traffic sounds a bit dangerous.

I'm not sure you'd really want to breath freeway air while on a bike.

Nor would you like to get mixed up in a traffic accident at freeway speeds. I have not driven near LA recently, but I've seen quite a few cars using carpool lanes illegally and expect they'd do the same with bike lanes unless there were physical barriers separating them from the main freeway.

I agree with Charles. When I lived in England, bike lanes were frequently ignored by driver, especially lorry delivery drivers. However, promoting alternative transportation is a great idea. Anyone know how good/bad the California public transportation system is?

Here in Christchurch NZ there have been bike lanes (and problems with them being ignored) for a long while. Recently though the lanes have been painted red in many areas(special non-slip surface) and drivers get fines if they drive in or cut into these lanes. The awareness does seem to be improving.
