Hawaii snow at 8,000 feet

The tropical islands of Hawaii are well known. You will find still very high mountains. Snow in Hawaii on the 13,500 high peaks of Mauna Loa and Mauna Kea is not unusual. About 8,000 feet is where the snow level is in Hawaii presently though. There could be very heavy rain in the lower elevations, and flash flood warnings have been issued in most Hawaiian cities. After Hawaii has had 2 yrs of a rough drought, it is seeing a lot of heavy rains.

49 states seeing snow

Florida doesn’t have snow on the ground. It is the only state. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, 71 percent of the country is covered in snow, to an average depth of almost seven inches. In the Southern states, the snow is having an especially bad effect on road traffic. There isn’t typically snow in the southern states. This is why it is uncommon to find snow removal equipment or safety equipment around. Northern states are having troubles too. They don’t have enough snow equipment around. The entire city has been quite much shut down in New York City and New York state.

Seeing this same thing last year

Almost all of the 50 states have snow on the ground. That isn’t that uncommon actually. This happened before. Just last year it was happening. Winter storms in areas of the country that are normally warm happen often during La Nina as the Pacific waters are cooling and colliding with warmer air. There is generally heavier snow in the second year of a La Nina cycle as there is now. Since 2010 was one of the warmest years on record though, it is a bit unusual.
