The recent 5th Australia - New Zealand Climate Change and Business Conference - held in Melbourne - Australia last week highlighted the opportunities for new dimensions of change to be added to the mix.
Are regulated responses to climate change able to generate the sort of action that is required? I mean regulators will certainly suggest that it is the only way - but what about learning from other business models such as the internet/ online/ social networking examples.......perhaps what is really required is the unfettered belief in people....??
Aren't we really in search of that tipping point that will activate a super-charged re-balancing of the weather and bio-logocal systems? - In which case the best thing we can do is bring forward the next generation of technologies.....not in 5 - 10 years time - but what about next year - or the year after??? This then comes down to capital support of those quality technologies that present near term opportunities....
A much more global view is required. From this part of the world - the Obama initiatives in this sector seem to be generating a lolly scramble for free cash.....semi-retired people are emerging from the woodwork - putting together new companies and seeking some of this free cash......There seems to be a real risk that this might only serve to produce 'solutions' that suffer from poor thinking....requiring subsidies to support the business model and produce only a short lived benefit.....
I think it is clear that the solutions for the USA might lie outside its geography.....yet how can it engage???
It was exciting to learn about what views and actions are emerging - being incubated in the Asia/ Pacific....perhaps there is something for other countries to learn from here....
