Apart from fashion goods, nothing in our society gets obsoleted faster than computers. Most computers don't die, they just get too bogged down by modern bloaty software to be as responsive as we'd like and this causes them to end up being dumped in favour of something a bit faster.
xubuntu to the rescue....
Most computer users would have heard of Linux. Linux is a free operating system that, amongst other things, can be used as a desk top operating system. One of the friendliest versions of Linux is Ubuntu which has gained a lot of popular usage.
Like Windows, Ubuntu has begun to get bloatier recently requiring a lot of RAM and hard disk to run.
Luckily there is a "light weight" version of Ubuntu, called xubuntu, that performs really well on lower spec machines.
One of my sons wanted a computer for doing various tasks. Rather than buy another computer, I took an old one out of storage and loaded xubuntu. This older computer was unbelievably slow running Windows and Ubuntu yet was very snappy with xubuntu.
