On this edition of The Celsias Show:

– Recently, the residents of Montville, a small community located in Maine, became the first town outside of California to ban the cultivation of genetically engineered crops. To do so, they had to take on the deep pockets and misguided motivations of corporations such as Monsanto, the Halliburton of the farming industry. Leslie Berliant speaks with some of the courageous farmers and town residents of Montville who helped to make this ban a reality, and they are joined in the discussion by Jeffrey Smith, founder of the Institute for Responsible Technology and author of Seeds of Deception, which is a book that the residents of Montville claimed as a major source of the inspiration and information that led to the actions they took.

– And of course, we hear from news personality Morton Welles, aka Ande Parks, who brings us his own views about Monsanto, along with some breaking news.

Original music by B-Side Records.

After listening to the show, check out our GMO category for more information on this critical issue. Also, Jeffrey Smith’s latest book — Genetic Roulette — is a must read:

Smith has to be the best science communicator alive today, and this book stands as the final word on GM health risks. It’s the definitive answer to those who don’t know, those who don’t want to know, and those who know but don’t want anyone else to know. – Claire Robinson, GM Watch

Note: The audio quality is a bit sketchy in some parts of the DeSmogblog segment (possibly because cell phone coverage wasn’t so good from the igloo that Mitchell called in from). We’ll be recombobulating it a bit (highly technical term for the work done by our audio department), and re-uploading within the next day or so.

Here are the vitals:

- News personality Morton Welles is breakin’ the law, sans Judas Priest
- Introducing a new game show, “Pill or Person?!?”
- Leslie Berliant interviews Norman Phillips about his experiences in the documentary film “The Carbon Connection“. Great interview (full length version here) but it’s notable that she didn’t ask the question that Morton Welles had suggested, which was “Aren’t you that guy who sang Spirit in the Sky?” Maybe it’s best that she didn’t ask though, since our crack research team has since discovered that the singer of Spirit in the Sky was actually Norman Greenbaum, not Norman Phillips
- The week in denial with DeSmogBlog’s Kevin Grandia
- And of course, listener phone calls

The documentary “The Carbon Connection” features the people of two towns, one in Brazil and one in Scotland, that are intimately linked by a carbon trading project of BP Scotland. This interview features a conversation with one of those people, Norman Phillip of Grangemouth, Scotland talking about some of the real outcomes of carbon trading.

Follow the red arrow, just below, to hear the interview, and head here to read more details and watch the documentary.

We’ve always appreciated the work of the Earth Policy Institute, and have run a lot of their material on our site, as well as recently reviewing their latest book — Plan B 3.0: Mobilizing to Save Civilization, written by the institute’s president and founder, Lester Brown. Recently, Celsias writer Leslie Berliant had opportunity to speak to Janet Larsen, Director of Research for the institute. Before you hit ‘play’ to hear the podcast below, here’s a brief description of the goals of this great research team.

The goal of the Earth Policy Institute is to raise public awareness to the point where it will support an effective public response to the threats posed by continuing population growth, global climate change, the loss of plant and animal species, and the many other trends that are adversely affecting the Earth.

The purpose of the Earth Policy Institute is to provide a vision of what an environmentally sustainable economy will look like, a roadmap of how to get from here to there, and an ongoing assessment of this effort, of where progress is being made and where it is not. — Wikipedia

The Cornucopia Institute has just released a potentially damning report that paints a disturbing picture:

Replacing Mother — Imitating Human Breast Milk in the Laboratory, details research questioning the alleged benefits of adding “novel” omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, produced in laboratories and extracted from algae and fungus, into infant formulas. The report presents disturbing research indicating that the new additives placed in infant formula are seriously endangering the health of some formula-fed newborns and toddlers. Aggressive marketing campaigns by some infant formula manufacturers appear to have encouraged new mothers to give up nursing and switch to use of the questionable infant formula products. — Replacing Mother — Imitating Human Breast Milk in the Laboratory (8.3mb PDF)

I had the opportunity to speak with Cornucopia’s Charlotte Vallaeys and Mark Kastel about this topic of concern.
