California Champagne Goes Organic
Korbel Champagne Cellars from Sonoma Valley in California has introduced the first California Brut Champagne made entirely with organically grown grapes, according to a press release issued today. It will be available to consumers beginning next month with a suggested retail price of $15.99 a bottle.
The winery, which has incorporated other sustainable methods over the years such as land conservation, recycling and reclaiming of materials, received its organic processor certification from the California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF) in 2007.
The grapes used to make the new Korbel California Brut Champagne have been produced according to the USDA organic certification requirements as the fruit is grown without the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides or fertilizers. Like all Korbel California champagnes, the new Korbel Brut with organically grown grapes is made according to the traditional methode champenoise technique where secondary fermentation takes place inside the bottle which results in perfect pinpoint bubbles.

The Minister for Primary Industries and Water, David Llewellyn, today launched October as Organic Month. A number of nationally co-ordinated events will be featured.
“The month will see two major campaigns,” Mr Llewellyn said.
“The first, Trust Organics, is a fortnight of national awareness featuring discussions and events around the importance of organic standards and the emerging issues on climate change.
“Coordinated by Organics Federation of Australia, the events will run in every State from Friday 2 October to Sunday 18 October.
The annual Farm Aid concert is scheduled for this coming Sunday, October 4 in St. Louis, MO. You can see any or all of it on the site's webcast.
Some key principals of Farm Aid:
Farm Aid stages America's longest running annual concert event that unites farmers, artists, consumers, and concerned citizens to build a powerful movement for good food from family farms. Throughout the year, Farm Aid promotes food from family farms through inspiring and informative television, radio, mail, and web campaigns.
[...]
The Good Food Movement is growing the number of Americans reaching for and demanding family farm-identified, local, organic or humanely-raised food. Farm Aid grants build connections between farmers and consumers creating new markets for family farmers.
The two acts on the lineup that have the highest musical appeal to me are Neil Young and Wilco.
Enjoy.
