The US Government Budget - Teetering on the Edge of Closedown

Celsias Team

This is an extraordinary game. The federal government is teetering on the brink of a shutdown in a few hours if there is no agreement between the parties on the budget dispute.

The memory of this happening in the 1990s will still remain for most Americans and it does seem that they do eventually sort these problems, but it does make you wonder when the largest economy in the world can literally close down.

One of the sticking points is the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) greenhouse gas regulations .

Republicans want to eliusdollarsminate funding that the EPA uses to regulate greenhouse gases (GHGs) and other pollutants. The Republicans  have  made this  and other social issues, such as abortion funding, major sticking points  to fund the federal government through the end of the year.

If the two sides cannot agree on a 2011 budget, a government shutdown will begin at midnight tonight.

We watch this with a mixture of  intrigue and horror .
