Social Media to Broadcast Call of the WILD

Kate R.

The upcoming WILD foundation conference is looking to cutting edge social media tools to help engage their audience. Known as Wild9, the conference is taking place in Merida, Mexico in early November.

mali elelphantWILD's core values center around protecting the planet’s last wild places and the wildlife and people who depend upon them. They believe wilderness areas are essential providers of social, spiritual, biological and economic benefit.

One of WILD's main program areas is the World Wilderness Congress. With a strong focus on wilderness conservation, the World Wilderness Congress is now the longest running international environmental forum in existence.

Historically they run a conference every three years, with many events and workshops held through out the year as part of the build up towards the actual event.

goodallThe ninth conference will incorporate many new technologies in an attempt to circulate the conservation method to as wide an audience as possible.  Key sessions from speakers such as Jane Goodall, Pavan Sukhdev, and Stephen Harding, will be streamed live through Ustream and there will also be blogging and twitter updates provided.

Furthermore, a channel will be established on Qik to provide ongoing footage of the event. Qik provides a mobile video platform for live video streaming and is compatible with applications like Twitter.

The clever use of innovative social media tools will assist the conference in getting their important messages across, boosted by the visual stimulation of video, enticing people to watch and learn.

Some of the major themes of the conference this year are:

  • Freshwater
  • Climate Change
  • Fire
  • Transboundary and Connectivity issues
  • Large Landscapes and Seascapes
  • Human Communities in Transition

Within these themes, several core topics are addressed and discussed, as illustrated on their website. The website also provides information on the conference's key speakers.

If you are interested in following events over the course of the conference be sure to have a look at WILD's website for more information. There are also video clips available showing presentations from the 2005 event.
