Ride to Sustain - On the Road Again

Ride to Sustain is back in action, and we're making up for lost time. After having to backtrack to Reno, NV to replace Jon's mangled bike we have been putting pedal to the metal across the state. Over the last three days we have covered 230 miles of Route 50 - The Loneliest Road in America. For us this is a tremendous total given our 70lb, onerous, unwieldy trailers (which we are eternally grateful to BOB for donating to the ride) and the fact that neither of my fellow riders had ever ridden more than 30 miles in a day. So tonight we are in Ely, NV, a mere day or two from our 3rd state - Utah!

Our goal is to make Salt Lake City in time for a FOX morning show on the 27th. As unnerving an experience as my first two live TV interviews were, I am finding myself looking forward to another chance to hone my message and get readers on to the site. This is going to be a tough goal to meet as I had planned our schedule around my ignorant notion of Nevada being flat... not sure where I got that idea, but it was terribly wrong. The Sierras were easier than this! We have at least two passes over 7,000ft each day and oppressive sunshine that does wonders with my Welsh genes. Speaking of sunshine, you should see the cool tans we are getting. I won't post a picture of it just yet (I want to wait until I look like a multi-ethnic barber pole), but to give you a rough idea, the tan lines are as follows; helmet chin strap, sun glasses, riding gloves, short sleeves, riding shorts and socks. Can't wait to sport the new look at the beach when I get back.

Riding route 50 - the loneliest road in America, as they are proud to call it, has caused a point from my Sacramento interviews to ring in my ears. Ultra-rural modern living is as bad as it comes for sustainability. Construction in Nevada is booming because of low income and property taxes and I ride past development after development where there was previously dry dirt. People out here are living 50-100miles from where they do their grocery shopping and God knows how far from where they work. Even if they built the greenest homes in the history of man kind it would all be overset a hundred-fold by the ecological damage they do driving hundreds of miles to do everything. Not to mention the fact that seeing a vehicle that is neither SUV or pickup is about as common as seeing another cyclist (we have seen two other road warriors so far in this state), and the stress on the seemingly non-existent water table is incredible.

It is way too late, so I am going to hit the hay. Night all.

Note: Interview/itinerary suggestions for the trip can be emailed to me.

Ride To Sustain will pass through the following cities: San Francisco, CA – Sacramento, CA – Reno, NV – Salt Lake City, UT – Denver, CO – Omaha, NB – Des Moines, IA – Chicago, IL – Detroit, MI – Cleveland, OH – Pittsburgh, PA – Washington, DC – Philadelphia, PA – New York City, NY – Hartford, CT – Boston, MA
