Porkine Putridity in Profusion

If you wonder what it's like in and around the world's largest pig production empire, please read this. And if you don't wonder what it's like in and around the world's largest pig production empire, please read it anyway. It's very well written, and extremely enlightening.

The Rolling Stone article focusses on Smithfield Foods - which has sixteen hog farm operations in twelve U.S. states. This company is responsible for some of the biggest environmental disasters ever known, and gifts misery and suffering to the people, and wildlife, that live in the vicinity of its farms. It has been generous in some areas - making large donations to political parties that were under pressure to monitor its waste management methods - and, not content with turning huge swathes of land in the U.S. into toxic waste dumps, and poisoning their rivers and oceans, they've now moved into Eastern Europe, where environmental groups are weak, and regulations almost non-existent - where they will put family-run enterprises out of business, and pollute even further afield.

It's industrial centralisation in its purest, ugliest form.
