India lost power again today in a second massive outage.
Half of the country lost power again as both the eastern and northern electricity grids collapsed. This left 600 million people without power . 600 million people is more than the population of the US and the UK combined, and is about half of India's population.
Serious concern has been raised about the capacity of India's infrastructure to cope.
Yesterday the northern grid collapsed for a number of hours.
Traffic lights went out across New Delhi.
The city's Metro rail system, which serves about 1.8 million people a day, immediately shut down for the second day in a row. This new power failure affected people across 13 states
India's demand for electricity has soared as its economy has grown rapidly in the last decade but India's Central Electricity Authority reported power deficits of more than 8 per cent in recent months. And this despite the fact that one third of India's households do not have electricity .
