FridgeBox

Jessica Gottlieb

fridgeboxI'm wandering around the Green Expo a bit aimlessly and stumble upon the most childlike adult I've seen in eons. And I call her childlike with deep reverence.

April is selling creativity and Multiple Intelligences to the masses. (See Ma! That M.A.Ed really did pay off!)

I stood in front of her booth a little baffled, a little entertained and quite curious. Part of me wanted to make fun of the lady who sells empty boxes to unsuspecting children and another part of me wanted to see what would happen if my kids got their hands on one.

Fast forward a week or so and there is a humongous box being delivered by UPS. Inside are four large pieces of cardboard and a set of racing car stickers. It took me about 30 seconds to take a ginormous panel and turn it into a race car shape for my son, Alexander, and another 5 seconds to offer up a storefront to my daughter, Jane.

fridgebox2Alexander (6) slapped some stickers on the racecar and was in it and ready to play. Jane (9) had an 11 year old friend over and they sat down with paper to make a plan about how to decorate and best use their shop. They came up with a coffee shop plan and before I knew what was happening, a neighbor had been invited over because they needed four employees and there were business meetings to hold.

After the business meetings came menus and price sheets and jobs. After the jobs were assigned there was money to print and coins to cut out, walls to decorate and customers to serve. They all carpooled in Alexander's hot rod. Alexander was inspired and returned to his race car to decorate it further.

My kids are so proud of what they created and they had so much fun doing it that they have no clue that it's learning. But, really, how green is it? Glad you asked because my kids were pulling all kinds of trash treasures out of the recycle bin to accessorize their store.

Four children ages 6 to 11 played with two Fridge Boxes (they come in sets of two) for four straight hours. I have never seen anything like it before. At just $24 to $36 for a two pack this might be my favorite gift ever especially for families with two kids or more.

Most importantly my kids got to look at a blank slate and make it their own. They have a newfound appreciation for household items and toilet tissue tubes. April and her Fridge Boxes have reclaimed a few moments of Jane’s and Alexander's childhood and reminded us all to color outside the lines.

Thank you, April. We're having so much fun.
