Why hello there. It's me again. Doug Snodgrass did a great job keeping up the Friday Linkfest in my absence but it sure is good to be back. So let's have a look at what happened to the environment this week. Good News
- Honda unveils its new hybrid, the Insight, which becomes available in the US next spring for a considerably lower price than the Prius.
- The California State Assembly passed a bill aiming to reduce commuting time in the state by promoting housing development near already existing industry and job sites. If approved by the state senate, it will become the nation's most far-reaching attempt to curb urban and suburban sprawl.
- Socially conscious carbon offsets aim to help the world's poorest communities cope with the effects of global warming.
- Green cement is able to sequester carbon emissions during its production, in contrast to traditional cement, whose manufacture generates 5% of global CO2 emissions.
- An eco-friendly club opens in Rotterdam, harnessing "dancing power" to light the dance floor. Sounds like the premise of a Saturday Night Fever remake.
Bad News aka Global Warming
- Thawing permafrost is likely to boost global warming, through the decomposition of the organic carbon therein stored.
- Sea level is predicted to rise faster than expected due to melting of the Greenland ice sheet.
- Speak of the devil, a 19 square mile ice sheet broke loose in Canada.
- Not to mention, global warming is said to spur more powerful hurricanes.
- Can we fix it with geo-engineering?
Think about that for a second. I'll see you next week.
