'Clean Coal' Exposed

The marketing shill 'Clean Coal' is both brilliant and delusional. It's a topic we've tackled time and time again. While many environmentalists have been pinning their hopes on a supposed massive CO2-mitigation potential, the reality is that carbon capture and storage (CCS), on a grand scale, the scale required, has never been done, and is rife with technological obstacles, immense cost, and major risks. The final nail in the coffin for CO2 sequestration is that even the most optimistic time-frame for implementation is far, far into the future -- yet it's being deceptively promoted as if it's saving the planet today, and used as justification to build more and more polluting coal-fired power plants worldwide.

Simply put -- it's a lie.

To ensure the dirty reality of 'Clean Coal' is brought to the fore, the DeSmogBlog team, in partnership with Greenpeace USA and the Rainforest Action Network have just launched a powerful new website called, appropriately, Coal is Dirty. Be sure to check it out, and if you're a blogger, add it to your blogroll.

The site has contributions from some powerful players. Read the DeSmogBlog introduction for the new site to find out more.

The reality is we don't have time for false promises and well-financed, self-serving deceptions from Big Industry.
