Global Warming Report: Bush Sued

Craig Mackintosh

Don't you hate it when you just know there was something you were supposed to do this week, but darned if you can remember what it was? A week later it comes to you when you're in the middle of something else... Perhaps Mr. Bush is feeling a bit like that at the moment. A Global Change Research Act enforced in 1990 states that a full global warming report must be released every four years. The last report was released in 2000, making the next one due in 2004. It looks like it's either been forgotten, or the report has accidentally slid down behind someone's desk and been lost... Although Mr. Bush may have forgotten the report, others haven't. Last week the Center for Biological Diversity, Friends of the Earth and Greenpeace all teamed up to file a suit against the federal government. The opposition are also adding their support to the law-suit since their efforts over the last two years to get either a report or an explanation out of the Bush administration have largely been met with silence:

“For too many years, action on global climate change has been stopped dead in its tracks by government foot-dragging, hiding information, and smothering science. Americans are way ahead of where this city has been on taking climate change seriously. In the old Congress they even trotted out the author of Jurassic Park as an expert witness to argue that climate change is fiction. This is Stone Age science,” said Senator John Kerry. “It’s the right time to push Washington to grapple with this issue. We can’t respond to climate change if we can’t make the government comply with the laws already on the books. This lawsuit sends an important message not just to follow the Global Change Research Act, but also to pass legislation imposing mandatory and substantial cuts in our greenhouse gas emissions. Let’s get serious.” - Senator Kerry
