(Bio) Da Versity Code

Robert Penguin is taken to the crime scene
The latest animated movie from Free Range Studios (the makers of The Meatrix series) is hitting the screen in front of you!

In the FR tradition of cinematic parodies, they’ve created a Da Vinci Code spoof that tackles one of the most dire and pressing environmental issues that is not being adequately addressed - the necessity for Biological Diversity.

This latest thriller begins with Robert Penguin, the world’s leading expert on biodiversity, being contacted to investigate the murder of a polar bear at the Natural History Museum. Teamed up with a sexy Parisian Minnow and suspected of the murder by an aggressive bovine cop, Penguin must sleuth through France to discover the ancient “Priority of Species” and unravel ”the Greatest Lie ever told.”

As the movie has well illustrated, a lot of people, even environmenalists, tend to separate our society and its needs from those of the creatures around us. A lot of climate change activists tend to isolate our problems into specialist areas - CO2 emissions, aircraft and vehicles in particular - and the complete interconnectedness, and interdependence of life within our biosphere is obscured.

Concerns over climate change should not obscure other environmental issues such as the rapid loss of species, argues Ahmed Djoghlaf, head of the UN biodiversity convention. There is much to be gained, he says, by treating the different issues together....

This growing recognition of the seriousness of climate change is entirely to be welcomed, and in fact is long overdue.

It should not, however, eclipse another equally pressing crisis humanity has brought upon itself: the biggest reduction in the variety of life on Earth since the demise of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. - BBC (rest of article recommended)
