Australia Has a New National Anthem?

A. Siegel

Australia’s incoming prime minister, Kevin Rudd, has named a singer from Midnight Oil, Peter Garrett, to be the new environmental minister. For those who the band name doesn’t ring a bell, there can’t be many who won’t recognize the music.

In naming his ministers, it is clear that the "three Es" are his main priority - the economy, education and the environment, says the BBC's Nick Bryant in Sydney.

By far the most eye-catching appointment is that of Peter Garrett as environment minister, our correspondent says.

Mr Garrett, who has been an MP since 2004, is best known as the former front man of rock group Midnight Oil, who had an international hit with the song Beds Are Burning. - BBC

The 3Es — while I might want “energy” to make it four, this is clearly a tremendous change in Australia’s national direction.

The time has come To say fairs fair To pay the rent To pay our share The time has come A facts a fact It belongs to them Lets give it back

How can we dance when our earth is turning? How do we sleep when our beds are burning? - Beds are Burning, Midnight Oil
