Alaska Changing: First Hand Account of Climate Change (+ Video)

Lauren McClanahan

Alaska Interested in the climate change bill currently before Congress?  Here’s a way to put a personal story to this issue. A trio of high school students in the rural fishing village of Kwigillingok, Alaska, have made a video slideshow of the climate impacts that they’re experiencing, many of which were documented in the US Climate Change Report.

The issue of melting permafrost is all the more clear with photos of houses collapsing. The problem of displacement of marine species affecting fisheries is made all the more real with their photos of abandoned fishing boats. These authentic voices are often missing from news stories on climate change.

This is a project spearheaded by Western Washington University’s education for sustainability program. Contact Director and instructor Lauren McClanahan.
