It's reported that xanthan gum could cause necrotizing enterocolitis, or NEC in baby under 12 months old. As parents have been using various thickening agents including xanthan gum in infant formula to make it easier to swallow. However, xanthan gum could cause overgrowth of specific bacteria which will lead to NEC.
