Triclosan: A Hidden Danger In Almost Every Home.
By Dawn ZigZag Montefusco
What is Triclosan? It is primary active ingredient in many antibacterial and antifungal products we all use on a regular basis. It is also a hidden chemical in almost every household. It causes a weakening of the immune system, allergies, asthma, and eczema. It’s been linked as a carcinogen and contributes to reduced resistance to antibiotics.
Our skin absorbs 60% of what is put onto it, and with so many ingredients going into our home products, it’s important to be vigilant. If you think you are immune to it’s effects consider this: surveys in Sweden have identified triclosan in the breast milk of 60 percent of women tested! Wowza.
Don’t Panic! There are well organized “watch dog” groups that are looking out for you and it’s our job at to help you find this information and introduce you to these groups.
Where does this hidden monster live? Triclosan is an anti-bacterial ingredient in many cosmetics and personal-care products. These include nearly half of all commercial antibacterial liquid soaps, cleansers, deodorants, detergents, toothpastes, and mouthwashes. The FDA concluded that triclosan posed "unacceptable health and environmental risks." However, the FDA still ignores this warning.
Go here to sign a Petition to Ban on triclosan. It expires on February 7, 2011, so act fast. Here’s the short list of products that have triclosan as an ingredient.
