U.S. Fuel Crisis Intensifies ANWR Debate
The battle over the ANWR (Arctic National Wildlife Refuge) in Alaska has been raging for years, but rising gas prices have stirred the pot even further among drilling supporters and opponents. The Republican Party, lead by President Bush, is touting drilling the ANWR as the answer to the country’s energy problems, which is cause for […]

Seeds of Democracy Alive in Montville, Maine
Editor’s Note: The following post is co-written by one of the contributors to our recent excellent ‘They Stood Up to Monsanto and Won‘ interview about genetically modified organisms that we ran on our Celsias Show. It’s a must-listen, if you haven’t already caught it.

The Bats and the Bees
The “white-nose syndrome” killing bats in New York, Vermont and Massachusetts has now spread to Connecticut and northeast Vermont according to a recent NPR report, and possibly into Pennsylvania, as well. Scientists still have not identified or determined a cause for the disease which kills up to 90% of the bats in infected caves, leading […]

Chemtrails: a Potential Disaster Used to Mitigate an Existing Disaster?
The most recent news on global warming is that it isn’t, at least temporarily. In fact, computer simulations indicate a slight cooling over the next decade, likely due to shifting currents and patterns in the oceans, themselves affected by Arctic melting and – quite surprisingly – a cooling trend in the Antarctic after decades of […]

Celsias Projects: Editor’s Picks, Edition #1
Hopefully you’ve been noticing that our Projects section has been growing steadily, as more and more people are sharing their global-cooling and environment-healing enterprises with the world. Today I thought I would begin a series that spotlights, in purely subjective fashion, those that strike me as particularly noteworthy. Today is the first installment. Watch out […]

The Global Food Crisis
By Peter Montague of Rachel’s Democracy & Health News
Global food prices have risen 83% in the last 3 years. This spring, as prices rose steeply, food riots broke out in Haiti, Egypt, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Mauritania, Ethiopia, Uzbekistan, Yemen, the Philippines, Thailand, Indonesia and Italy, among other places. Because U.S. energy policy […]

Mount Trashmore
Mount Trashmore is a popular local park in Virginia Beach, Virginia, which stretches for 165 acres. The park attracts over one million visitors per year and features playgrounds, amusement rides, walking trails, two lakes for fishing, picnic areas, and a skateboard park. None of this, except for perhaps the park’s name, seems odd at first.
When […]

Global Warming Requires Collective Solutions
Throughout the last year I have written extensively about flawed modes of thought shaping our environmental discourse. One challenge I have yet to elaborate is the problem of thinking in terms of Hero Myths where we, the inept community, must wait for some knight in shining armor to save us from disaster.
My former colleague Glenn […]

The Urban Green Revolution
It is no mystery why many environmentalists are critical of the green building revolution taking the form of $2 million, 4500 square foot homes in tony suburbs or homes that are considered environmentally friendly because they take advantage of nature somehow, like the German Tree House. But there is another green revolution happening simultaneously. […]

Exxon Founders Advocate Change
If necessity is the mother of invention, it can also be the catalyst of change. Public Radio International reports that the Rockefeller family is taking on the CEO of Exxon Mobil, the company founded as Standard Oil by their great, great grandfather John D. Rockefeller in 1870. And this rare public engagement of the family […]

Pangea Day - May 10
Back in 2006, filmmaker Jehane Noujaim, the creator of the documentary Control Room, won the TED Prize and $100,000 to activate an idea to change the world (some background on this). That idea was to bring the world together through film. Pangea Day, the name she gave the project is coming to fruition this Saturday […]
