What on earth are they thinking?

On November 9, 2007, the Solar Energy Industries Association said that “there are widespread reports that a decision has been made, at least provisionally, to move energy legislation without a tax title that extends the Solar Investment Tax Credits.” In laymans terms, Congress is trying to remove the tax credits to those who invest in solar energy.

This is a big bust for commercial solar customers. Currently, they receive a 30% tax credit against total system costs. This allows business owners to turn their properties “green”. In 2006, 41% of all solar installations were from commercial customers. If the tax credit is removed, the solar industry could take a big punch.

On Monday, November 12th, solar stocks plunged an average of 7.8% as a result of this news.

Despite meagre investment, solar technology has made significant advances and is arguably our best hope for a clean, green energy-independent future as peak oil and climate disaster looms.
