Buy Nothing Day!

Craig Mackintosh

That's right - surf the net, read a bit, learn something. Just don't head down to the shops. Today is International Buy Nothing Day, and today we wage war on our consumeristic tendancies. It's a day to go for a walk, fix that loose door hinge, play ball with the kid, or grandkid, and... um... to just do something else. Let the sweet sounds of cost-free recreation envelope your neighbourhood.

Actually, I've never been a fan of all these 'Annual Something-er-another days'; International Day of the Three-Legged Dog and all that. But, imagine what a saving the world can make by skipping just one day at the mall. Even if 5% of the world would decide to join us, and not only avoid shopping but didn't go anywhere unless it was by foot or bicycle. That's approximately 300 million people multiplied by X amount of dollars and Y amount of fuel. My algebra is a little off, but that's got to add up to something pretty significant.

So, enjoy the day, and make it special. Hey, what the heck - in the true spirit of things, I'll even give you the day off! Shut the computer down, and surprise the family with your presence as well.
